Literacy
Early Literacy is one of the most important learning areas for young children. Learning to read and write is the beginning of the creation of a ‘life long learner’. The Children First Norwich/School Readiness council sponsors a number of events for children, parents, teachers and other interested people that highlight this idea. Through collaboration with early care and education providers such as Head Start and the Norwich Family Resource Center, CFN/SR promotes information sessions for parents so they’ll know how important it is to read to and with their children, how to choose appropriate books and how to encourage a love of reading that will enhance their child’s ability to succeed in school. Teachers are provided with training about how children learn to read and how they can best support that learning. With a growing number of families coming to Norwich for whom English is not their first language, the CFN/SR Council, through collaboration between Norwich Adult Education and the Norwich Family Resource center, is working to acclimate these families and their children through helping them to acquire English.
